Scrape, Skim Coat or Cover a Popcorn Ceiling?

Scrape, skim coat or cover a popcorn ceiling is the choice that sets your price, your mess and your finish, and here is how each one works and which homes each one fits.

  • Scrape and repair
  • Scrape and skim coat
  • Leave it or enclose it

Option 1: scrape it off

The classic choice, and the texture is wetted and scraped off, then the drywall is repaired and finished; Bob Vila describes working in small sections and letting the water soak in (Bob Vila).

It works best when the lab says no asbestos and the ceiling was not painted heavily, and Angi lists $1 to $6 per square foot for removal (Angi*).

Option 2: scrape and skim coat

After scraping, a thin coat of compound covers the whole ceiling and is sanded flat, and national Gypsum says this full skim is what separates Level 5 from Level 4 (National Gypsum).

It gives a flat, modern look and costs more, and see smooth ceiling finishing.

Option 3: new texture, or leave it alone

If you like some texture, scrape and apply knockdown or orange peel, and orange peel runs $1.25 to $1.95 per square foot and knockdown over $2 in one guide (Angi*).

If the ceiling tests positive, you can leave it, and EPA says undisturbed material in good condition is usually best left alone (EPA). Ask your abatement contractor what fits your ceiling.

A customer who understood the process

After years of looking at our old popcorn ceilings, we finally decided to have them removed. Clovis Popcorn Ceiling Removal did an excellent job from beginning to end. The team was courteous, efficient, and made sure we understood the entire process. We absolutely love how everything turned out!

Scrape, Skim or Cover: questions answered

Is scraping or skim coating better?

Scraping alone leaves repairs to finish, and a skim coat gives the smoothest result for more money (National Gypsum).

Can you skim over popcorn without scraping?

Texture is usually removed first, and ask us in the walk-through.

Is covering with new drywall an option?

It can be for ceilings that test positive, when an abatement contractor advises it, and ask them.

Which option is cheapest?

Scraping and painting is usually the least, and skim coating and retexturing add cost.

Which option is least dusty?

Leaving it alone, then scraping with a wet method, and see what to expect.

How do I choose?
